Tax LLM Advice and TARE participants

Post by chevron321 » Thu Jul 18, 2019 7:19 pm

Hey guys,

I will be attending a Tax LLM program this fall (think UF/NW). I graduated cum laude (3.3-3.4 range) from a decent law school (80s-90s in ranking), secondary journal, moot court, and worked for big firms both 1L and 2L summers. I would appreciate if you all could give me some advice regarding prospects of employment and TARE (requirements to be eligible/firms or businesses that participate). I saw a lot of information regarding TIP but little to nothing on TARE. Also, I did not take significant amount of Tax Law classes in law school. Do you think it will be detrimental to my candidacy? I would appreciate any advice in general.

Thanks in advance! :)

Did you get no-offered? Anyway, I think TARE is predominantly Big 4. Not sure what you’re looking to do, but it’ll be difficult getting a big law firm with a medianish GPA from a tier 2 school and an LLM from UF/NW.

They did not have a spot in that specific office. They tried placing me in a different office, but it did not work out. I am open to working for a Big 4 or BigLaw. Is making it to a Big 4 with a UF/NW LLM very competitive? Do you have any other advice for me? Thanks again!

You should have been looking for an SA position this summer. I don't know enough about the Big 4 hiring but there's a lot of info on these boards.

Big4 are always hiring LLMs for international tax and M&A tax. Just depends what office you are looking for. Some like NYC hire a lot each year, some small offices don't have those groups, some offices have small groups and hire 0-1 LLM per year, some have large groups but prefer to hire people with 1-2 years of experience first. Bottom line is if you want big4 tax out of a top LLM it wouldn't be too hard.
