Did I make a mistake

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Jul 17, 2019 12:49 pm

My question has been answered and apparently was too easily identifiable (one of my fellow summers saw it and called me out  ), so I am deleting the text. Thanks for all of the help!!!!

No mistake. You have a medical condition that prevents you from safely participating in golfing. You should absolutely not have risked injuring yourself just to go on that golfing trip.

I was honest and said I have a medical condition which prevents me from golfing (think knee/back) for the time being. Also stated my clubs, shoes, etc are halfway across the country where I live (didn’t bring them home because knew I couldn’t play this summer). I feel like he understood, but now I am the only male summer not going (4 total in my office). I specifically stated in the questionnaire we filled out before the program that golf and tennis were not options for me this summer. Am I overreacting? I just feel really awkward, but I feel like saying yes would have been a bigger mistake, I.e just sitting there (also he wanted to walk and that isn’t really an option for me either). Do I bring it up further/just ignore it/do something I’m not considering?
No of course not, if anything the partner made a mistake, it's a bit negligent to invite associates to an event where some people might be excluded due to a medical condition. Maybe shoot him an email and ask to grab lunch 1-on-1 the following week? That way you can get some alone time and you can talk about golf, etc. That being said, keep this incident in your back pocket. It's unlikely to happen, but imagine you get no offered and they claim it's because you weren't as involved in outings or some bs.

OP here. This is my worry. I freely admit I am the most reserved of all the Summers in my program. I’ve never missed an event, but I am obviously quieter/have a “smaller personality” than the other 6 associates in my program.

I think the email may be a good move. Just reiterate the injury and my gratitude for the invite, etc.

Were only male summer associates invited to this outing? Or did the female summers just decline?

They all declined. Everyone was invited. It’s definitely not mandatory, so I guess I am feeling better about it? Also one of the other dudes will be on a clerkship interview, so I won’t be the only dude missing. I’m retrospect I may have been overreacting. Thanks for all the responses.
