Appropriate salary for in house tech company
I'm going to interview for an established nyc tech company for an inhouse position. I have 3-4 years experience, decent background in the field.
What is appropriate to answer when asked for salary expectations?
I'm thinking 90-120, but I dont want to over or undershoot the appropriate answer.
Thanks.

You should check out the other in house salary threads, but it depends on the size of the company, etc. I got offered $170k salary, 25% target bonus, and $20k of RSUs vesting over 3 years at a large public tech company in Southern California. I think you’re aiming way under.

This company is not publically traded, less than 200 employees. I don't know if that makes a difference.

With your experience, I think you can ask for more. Of course, it's all market specific. If you are asked salary expectations, I wouldn't give a set number - if you are too high they may disqualify you. You have more leverage to negotiate once you get an offer.
If asked the question in the interview, just say, "I don't have strict salary expectations, but I would expect somewhere around the market pay for my experience based on my research for other positions like this." Hopefully, that keeps them at bay, if not, then you throw your 90-120 figure.

Re: Appropriate salary for in house tech company
I agree with the other poster that it's generally best not to throw out a number. That being said, I almost always did because a high base comp was important to me given my personal financial situation and I didn't want to waste time. Also, I do think that is still pretty low for base comp. I would say at least $135K if you are comfortable going that low. Really even that seems likely low to me. Often companies of that size do not have formal cash bonus programs, which is another thing to consider and may justify a higher base comp.

Count me in the camp that thinks you are way aiming way low... if the company has already received funding, I would expect no less than 150k . If it hadn’t yet received substantial funding, then it is really an option/equity play not a salary play, so that’s up to you to evaluate./

You are really selling yourself short here. You should check comps on indeed.com (you can filter by salary), Robert Half's in-house salary report, and also check The Lawyer Whisperer blog [<--clutch advice here]. IME, most of my friends who came from biglaw before years 5-6 took a slight cash paycut to go in-house, and if they were 6th+, all-in, the pay was often better than biglaw.Anonymous User wrote:I'm going to interview for an established nyc tech company for an inhouse position. Thanks.
For reference, I was seconded in-house from biglaw, work at a Series D/E stage company that is cash flow positive, and my base is well north of what you quoted, plus I have heavy options. I am a Law Dept of one atty, one paralegal. I went in house as a junior-midlevel, but have substantial prior work experience/tech company experience (I replaced a 5th year attorney).

Ditto. I'm making $165k, no options.I just started my third year in March. I think that options come into play with my next promotion (which is probably not gonna happen for another 2 or 3 years given the state of the department right now), but I don't remember for sure.Anonymous User wrote:Recently made the move in house in a major market as I'm completing my third year. $170k base + options

Relatedly, does anyone have any advice on how best to negotiate base salary? Getting to the final stages of interviewing for a in-house tech job, and the base salary range they mentioned is about $20k less than I was expecting/what I've heard is market in the area.

If you need nego advice, look at the Lawyer Whisperer blog. She has some excellent archived posts about how tech companies band associates, titles, and nego strategy. cannot recommend more highly.
