Two Markets or Three Markets?

Post by eightleggedfreaks » Mon Jun 24, 2019 9:44 am

I am targeting Chicago but I’d also be happy in DC. Duke, around median. That said, those are tough markets to get. Would it be okay to split my bids DC/Chicago/NYC? I’ve heard mixed things about three markets, but I’ve also heard it’s not good to leave out NYC altogether. Of course, it follows from that logic that one can only bid one additional market on top of NYC. I don’t want that. Thanks for any thoughts.

Was in a somewhat similar position as you a few years back (was at northwestern, probably top 1/3 or so). Wanted Chicago, but wanted another large non-NYC as my backup. I primarily bid those two market, but filled up my bid list with a few big NYC firms just to be safe (ones that had large classes and my GPA was right in the sweet spot). I had maybe 3 NYC OCI screeners total, which felt safe enough -- also, I chose firms that had decent offices in my true target mkts so that a potential transfer was theoretically in the cards down the road.

How did you talk about those 3 NYC screeners in your interviews with the other two markets? Did you get offers from any?
