Fired from in house after almost 3 months
So title says it all, I lateraled from one in house/managerial position to another, and got fired after almost 3 months. They are letting me say that I left.
Questions- I think I should keep it on my resume because the problems associated with omitting it and having it discovered are worse than explaining why I was somewhere for such a short time.
What do you all think? How do I salvage this? Luckily I have a large part time client/private practice that I can still list on my resume for the last 2 years.
How do I proceed?
PS- before anyone asks, I honestly think the reason I was fired was a mismatch between my understanding of the job and my supervisor's expectations. I don't want to get into it in further detail.

What do you want to do? How soon can you get a job? Can you (or do you want to) go back to your old job? Any other lateral positions open?

Op here.
Again I just think this was a bad fit. I want to work in a in-house position but one more guidance and mentoring then I had here. I can’t go back to my old job since that’s the risk of leaving. I’m sure there are a lot of positions but not necessarily in the same exact industryimpactplayer wrote:What do you want to do? How soon can you get a job? Re: Fired from in house after almost 3 months
OP, sorry to hear that. I would try to get something passable as soon as you possibly can in order to avoid a resume gap. From there for like 10 months or so, I would look to do a much broader job search. Will you seem like a jumper? Yeah maybe that’s a risk, but legal job searches take a while and IMO, a resume gap is much more concerning from a hiring perspective, as long as you have a good narrative prepared.Anonymous User wrote:So title says it all, I lateraled from one in house/managerial position to another, and got fired after almost 3 months. I’d personally leave a job I was at for 3 months off the resume.

I would leave this off. The benefit of the three months of experience is not the worth the consequences or need to explain why you were terminated (or allowed to resign in lieu of termination) after three months.

Leave it off - folks can always just think that maybe you took a long vacation between jobs, nothing wrong with that.

to all the people saying I should leave it off- what if it comes up on background checks? If you google my name, stuff related to the position comes up. I am torn on this.

Your resume isn’t required to be comprehensive - it’s you presenting the employer with what’s relevant.
What actually comes up when you google your name?

my linkedin, which I havent changed yet, my government attorney registration, which i did change but that takes time to update on google. the company deleted me off their website but alas, it still shows up on google.
Also, what do i say for why i left a perfectly good job for 3 months?

You tell the truth, i.e., that the job wasn't a good fit.Anonymous User wrote:nixy wrote:Your resume isn’t required to be comprehensive - it’s you presenting the employer with what’s relevant.

If you're asked why you left it off your resume, you simply say that you included the most relevant experience on your resume, and you didn't feel that adding a 3-month stint to your resume would be relevant. But I doubt you'd be asked. At most this would come up in background checking, and there they're more concerned with whether you have a criminal record and whether the things on your resume are actually correct (i.e., that you actually worked at the places you say you've worked at, you actually earned the degrees you claim to have). They're not concerned about whether your resume is comprehensive. It's rare (possibly almost unprecedented) for resumes to be comprehensive - people always curate what makes it onto those 1-2 pages.
Obviously if you apply via some web portal or whatnot that has a form asking you to list all of your jobs, you list this job. Don't try to omit it.

Okay, I agree with people who say leave this off. Eventually those things will move down the search results.Anonymous User wrote:nixy wrote:Your resume isn’t required to be comprehensive - it’s you presenting the employer with what’s relevant.

I don't think three months is really a long enough time to have to worry about explaining. If it comes up, you could say something along the lines of the previous job was great but you knew you wanted to make a change/were looking for new experiences, and took some time for a break in between (travel, spend time with family, whatever works for you). Frankly most people will assume you were working on your client/private practice thing - there's nothing that requires you to designate that as part time.

are there any ethical issues that I could run into with the omission?

No. Resumes are a presentation of yourself and don't have to be comprehensive. They're painting you in the best light, so include/exclude what helps do that. As already noted, obviously if you're required at some point to list all your previous jobs, then you include it.

Why are you "sending it in" to any jobs at all, unless those jobs specifically ask you to list all of your prior jobs?Anonymous User wrote:op here-

The recruiter and the general advice ITT agree - don't include a 3-month stint in your resume. It will only hurt you. There is no way it would help you.

Avoid the question without lying. Chances are fewer people will ask than you think. Say you were focused on other opportunities (which is technically true) or something...give some bland generic response. I don’t think this is as big a deal as you think.

Yeah, I really don’t think people are going to ask much about 3 months. Assuming you were working your part time gig, just say that.

Thanks, everybody. Now a more formal recruiter said I definitely have to keep it on. I guess case by case basis.

I would lean towards keeping it off, especially if you can just say you are currently doing your part-time legal work which you should say it is really full-time. You can say you wanted to try doing litigation but you found working for yourself too difficult because you had few clients or something of that effect.Anonymous User wrote:Thanks, everybody. I was at a job for three months and I wouldn't put it on my resume if you paid me $10,000.

Thanks guys. A problem I've already had with recruiters etc is "how many hours do you work for company x? Would you consider ending work with company x if company y gave you an offer"?sparty99 wrote:I would lean towards keeping it off, especially if you can just say you are currently doing your part-time legal work which you should say it is really full-time. And obviously, now that I see how fickle life is and how you can be kicked to the curb like a piece of crap, I'm not giving up a great client that loves me for a hope at a new place. My previous in house position didn't care as long as I took care of it after their hours and didn't use their resources for it.
Yeah, this is a tough one.
