NY Bar Registration question

Post by salvage » Sun Jun 09, 2019 2:50 pm

I moved out of state a few years ago, and have come up for registration. I'm considering whether it's worth it to shell out another $375 with no plans to move back to NY anytime soon, and unfortunately NY doesn't look like it allows an "inactive" status. From what I've read, it looks like you need to pony up and register unless you have retired from the practice of law, in every jurisdiction. Can this really be the case? I've not found anything that indicates there is a way to simply resign from practicing in NY, but I figure I must be missing something. Any advice is much appreciated.

I can't imagine its changed since then, but one of my coworkers went "inactive," or suspended, her license to deal with child care issues in the 90s. She was inactive for several years before she decided to start practicing again. She may have had to do it on motion and submit updated stuff like Character and Fitness information, but she definitely didn't need to retake the bar or anything crazy like that.

edit: here ya go -- https://www.nycourts.gov/courts/ad2/att ... tion.shtml (for Second Department)

edit 2: here's for all courts: https://www.nycourts.gov/courts/ad2/pdf ... Signed.pdf (look up rule §1240.22)
