I applied to a job a few weeks ago and haven’t heard back. Would it be off base to reach out to an associate to get an update? I know recruiting doesn’t like getting bombarded with emails, especially without interviews.
Has anyone done this before? I thought i had a very good chance at at least an interview, so I’m a bit surprised by the silence.
applied on own. Reach out to classmate for referral after? Forum

You put yourself in a bit of a difficult spot here. TCR is never apply straight up if it can be helped. By not going through the friend, you likely effectively precluded them from a pay-out if you are to get hired. Direct online portals are often black boxes.
To directly respond to your question, it comes down to this person’s personality and your relationship with them. Are they the kind of person who would try to help even though you didn’t reach out to them first? I would be for some (even many) people in this situation even though I didn’t get the prior reach out...but for just a random former classmate I barely knew, maybe not under those circumstances. I’m not sure

Thanks for the response. I completely forgot that my classmate worked at the firm (it’s a pretty small firm) until I was on LinkedIn today.objctnyrhnr wrote:You put yourself in a bit of a difficult spot here. At this point, should I just reach out to HR? I’m going to be in town next week and really was hoping to schedule something.
It’s a “worse” firm in a secondary market (where I went to school), so I honestly thought I’d have a good shot at an interview.
