Small department at big firms--no associates in group
I'm interviewing at a large firm in a secondary market. The office has only 2 partners and no associates that would be in my group. I believe that they are looking to hire an experienced associate, but for now it's just the 2 partners. This concerns me. Even though there is great opportunity for mentorship, I anticipate being slammed with work. Anyone have any thoughts?

Are there associates in other offices that work for the two partners? Would you also be working for partners in other offices? There's plenty of cross-office work in firms, so unless they told you that you'll only be working for these two (or they're the only two partners at the firm who do that work), I wouldn't assume anything. I also don't think you'll definitely be slammed with work, depending on why they're hiring - if they're replacing someone who left, there's probably 200 hours of work/month to step into, but if they're building up their practice group and just getting to the point where they need someone, then you might not be consistently busy.
