What happens if I don't get a 1L summer job?
I've been offered a position at a USAO. I'm pretty sure I'll be fine, but it's possible that I don't pass the background check, which I wouldn't know about until May, too late to pursue many other offers. I don't think this will happen, but I'm planning ahead for the worst. What happens if May rolls around & my offer falls through, leaving me without a 1L summer internship / position? Do I have any good options at that point, or does my resume just take a ding?

There are plenty of legal jobs still available for 1Ls in May.

Also, at least at my school, there was always an option for (low pay, but paid) work in the library doing research (or more specifically RA for a prof).
It's not a great outcome, but at least it's not a hole and probably gives you as good experience as anything else.
