Do Latin Honors Matter?

Post by LawSchoolGeek2 » Wed Jan 30, 2019 4:39 pm

For context, I go to a T14, have a 2L SA gig lined up, and somehow pulled off a sport on my school's law review. However, I did just about average the past couple semesters and am feeling like I might not make cum laude. Will this matter for employment down the line, say if I want to lateral somewhere or do a clerkship? I guess what I'm asking is, will the fact that I didn't make honors outweigh school rank/other accomplishments for future employment opportunities and could it impact getting an offer after my 2L SA position ends?

Your grades won't matter re: getting a permanent offer after your 2L SA. They will matter if you want to do 3L OCI/3L hiring, or if you lateral as a junior (and the more junior you are, the more your grades will matter, as you won't really have (much) job experience to sell). They will also matter for applying to clerkships.

But it's more the GPA/actual grades that matter, and less the fact of Latin honors in and of themselves. Different schools do honors differently anyway and no one keeps track of each school's specific requirements for honors.
