2L Summer International Internship at firm?

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Jan 30, 2019 1:31 pm

I am a 2L transfer at a lower T14 with [slightly] above average grades. Was in Law Review at previous school but was not able to participate in competition at new school.
OCI did not go well; made some poor bidding decisions had bad interviews.
I applied to this international internship program and got an offer to work as an intern at a Big Law firm in its Mexico City Office this Summer. Would this be a good option if I'm looking to work at a Big/Mid-size law firm post-grad? I'm mainly looking to work in either DC or NY.
I currently have no other offers but I'm waiting to hear back from a couple mid-sized firms.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

If you have no other options currently on the table, I'd take the offer. At this late stage (I assume you're a second-semester 2L now), it's unlikely you'll land a(nother) BigLaw SA gig for the upcoming summer. BigLaw's still BigLaw, even if it's in Mexico City. Is there any chance you'd be able to split the summer between their Mexico City office and one of their U.S. offices?

Further, even if one or more of the midlaw firms extends you an offer for this summer, for 3L OCI and 3L job-hunting, having a BigLaw SA (and permanent offer) on your resume - international or not - will help far more than having midlaw on your resume. With midlaw on your resume, you'd be a candidate looking to trade up to BigLaw - a tough sell in the already tough 3L market. With a BigLaw SA on your resume, you'd merely be looking to switch markets - a far easier (albeit still difficult) sell.

Thank you for the response.

The issue is that this is technically an "internship" with only a $1500/mo stipend and not a SA gig, so they are not part of the same program and would not be able to split w/ one of their U.S. offices. Because of that they are unlikely to offer me to come back post-grad.

Realistically, I should not be expecting to land BigLaw anymore. My main concern right now is post-grad employment. I guess I'm scared that there aren't any summer law firm (Big, mid, or small) left
