Too Early to Leave Biglaw?

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Oct 01, 2018 9:03 pm

I felt like this day would never come. I've been at a big law firm for the past year, right out of law school. I always thought I could hold out for 4-5 years but after being here for a year and becoming a shell of the person I once was, I know I can't hold out much longer. I'm in DC so there are definitely other opportunities - I've been thinking of applying to gvt positions (interested in healthcare/HHS/FDA space) or corporate counsel positions in the area. I haven't applied to anything yet and I know it'll take a while to get a new position, but is it too soon to think about leaving in January if it means a much happier life? Loans not an issue, have some money saved, but not a ton.

Tangentially, if I went into government now, how would that affect my prospects for in house down the line? I could see myself happily doing either, but admittedly, I am tempted to take the best offer I get in the next 6 months or so. I'm not super worried about going in house early as I know it's possible to jump to different companies and move up, but would be more worried about gvt --> company potential.

Any thoughts appreciated - thanks guys

What's your practice area? It's not too early, necessarily, though being a 3rd or 4th year would be easier, but you might as well as look to see what you can get.

I'm in the corporate group doing healthcare and FDA work, so fairly niche
