Applying to multiple locations for Biglaw firm?

Post by Anonymous User » Thu Aug 30, 2018 12:21 am

I saw a symplicity posting for a biglaw firm in NY, filled out the application on their portal and submitted it. Then I saw on the firm website that they had an opening in another office as well. Is it okay if I submit an application to this office also? If not how can I apply to this other office? Should I wait until I hear back from the NY one? Do they communicate/will they know I applied to both?

Bonus-Should I mention in the secondary location that I applied to the NY office?

Thanks!

Some firms will communicate, some won't. I'd probably just apply to both and not mention it to either (mentioning it isn't going to help you). In interviews and cover letter, don't go "all-in" on the "I want to be in THIS city" angle because they might see you applied to both and then know you're lying. But, in a worst case scenario, they have central hiring coordination and they just condense your application into one application. In the best case scenario, you get two bites at the apple. I actually applied to three (three!) locations of a single firm as a 2L and got offers independently at two offices. I then ended up just splitting my summer between the two offices. Some others in my summer class wanted to do the same split but didn't get to because I had kind of "stolen" the opportunity by having a pre-existing place in both. Woops. I felt kinda derp about having done it the wrong way (didn't realize I wasn't supposed to apply independently to multiple offices). In hindsight it worked out though.
