Help Me Choose a Firm (NY IP/Patent)

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Aug 28, 2018 1:06 pm

Hi everyone! I am interested in IP litigation, mostly in life science patent lit. I don't really care that much about prestige and I mostly just want to do work that I'm interested in (as in, not high tech patent work). I heard that Fitzpatrick is merging with Venable, so I am nervous about what that might mean for the firm in the near future, especially since I would be part of the first SA class under the new merger. I liked the people I met at Baker Botts the best, but I hear that their life science work is mostly focused in Austin, not NY. And finally, I thought Greenberg was great, but there were all those rumors regarding the secret raises. Did these secret raises happen in NY? Should I be concerned about it? Finally, I was wondering which of the three had the best exit opportunities because I would like to work in-house one day. Thank you!

BB's NY office is relatively small, especially for the IP section. Their IP group is mainly in Dallas, Houston, and Austin.

I did a couple years at BB during law school. The training was okay, the support staff was awesome, and the partners were insanely busy. Some made the time to teach me how to do my job, others just got irritated when they didn't get nicely polished work product out of me. I got the sense that my mentor partner tried to insulate me from some of the less agreeable partners, but I often trolled the hallways, soliciting attorneys for extra work. I picked up more work from the breakroom than from my mentor partner. Most of the associates were cool, but half of them were gone by the time I left.

I decided to go with another job, in part, due to not feeling like I was being well trained. Nothing against the training that I did receive, but there were major areas of practice where I didn't get nearly enough exposure and had to make up for in my post-graduation job.

Did you also work in the IP group at BB? What was it about BB that was initially drew you to work their while in law school?

I can't message you because I'm a new member. Is there some other way I can contact you?

I did, on the patent pros side. The thing that drew me to them was that they offered me a 35hr/week job at a good hourly rate. I was in evening school, so it made sense at the time to take the almost full-time job. Also, they are one of the top firms in TX, so I was hoping to lock down a post-grad job with them.

For NY IP work, I think the Chambers Partners list is a pretty good indication:
https://www.chambersandpartners.com/128 ... torial/5/1

GT is nowhere on that list; plus, given all that they've said with raises, etc., I wouldn't be rushing over there.
BB is a player in that field, is a generally well-regarded firm, and wouldn't be a wrong choice for you; but it is correct that much of the IP strength is in Texas.
Venable/Fitzpatrick is probably the best choice, as far as quality of work and lawyers in the NY office. Venable has a decent IP lit program, and has shown that it wants to expand that practice with its merger with Fitzpatrick.

Assuming you want to be in the NY area for the long term, I think in-house exit options for Venable/Fitzpatrick would be the best, as they are most likely to have pharma clients in the NY/NJ area.

GTTT does more of their life sciences work out of NJ, if OP is okay with north jersey, but yeah, Venable/Fitz is TCR here
