Mass Mailing
I have yet to receive any movement on mass mailing applications, but I applied to about 80 firms outside of OCI back in June/early July. Have had multiple callbacks and no offers yet (through OCI). I'm beginning to freak out about striking out. I obviously need to find more firms to mass mail, but is there anything I should do regarding my June/July mass mails (following up)? Or just assume those are a lost cause?

Have you been following up? Also 80 isn't enough. Do more.

Re: Mass Mailing
Probably a dumb question, but how are people finding firms to mass-mail outside of those that are listed on NALP?

Re: Mass Mailing
You can probably access Law360 through the law library of your school. Law360 has a list of the 400 largest firms. I just scroll through that, look at the offices of that firm, and apply, because some of the mid-size law firms are not NALP members.Anonymous User wrote:Probably a dumb question, but how are people finding firms to mass-mail outside of those that are listed on NALP?

Re: Mass Mailing
As someone who has been discouraged throughout this process I want to share some good results from mass mailing...
Don't give up. I struck out at OCI as a transfer, and have received 2 callbacks, 1 screener, and several "we might be interested"-type emails in the last week. One callback I received was from a firm I applied to a week and a half ago, and the other is from a firm I applied to YESTERDAY.
It is not too late - I actually think now is better than a week or two ago because offers are expiring and firms have a better idea of what they need.

Also struck out at OCI and have received multiple screeners, multiple CBs without screeners, and offers from direct applies that came after OCI ended. I'm not sure when it's okay to give up and say you struck out, but I know that time has not come yet.

To all the previous transfers: i'm a fellow transfer, and I have struck out at OCI as well. I've been MM for over 2 weeks now (mostly in NY) and have not gotten a single response. did you guys mass mail secondary markets? were they vault firms or mid-law? i'm not sure what else to do

Re: Mass Mailing
I massed mailed one secondary market where I had connections and NYC. I mailed every firm that was at my OCI who I did not get an interview with. For the record, I have not heard back from NYC either.Anonymous User wrote:To all the previous transfers: i'm a fellow transfer, and I have struck out at OCI as well. Are you filling out online apps or emailing recruiters only? One of my CBs was from email, one from filling out online.

Re: Mass Mailing
You should mass mail all major markets and any secondary market to which you have ties. Low cost. Low chance of success per application. High potential payoff.Anonymous User wrote:To all the previous transfers: i'm a fellow transfer, and I have struck out at OCI as well. Re: Mass Mailing
thank you for your response! I just needed some kind of confirmation that i'm not the only one with silence from NY. But i've been emailing recruiters directly-I do fill out the online form if I get a response from them asking me to, but otherwise it just seems to take up too much time. Also did you MM these firms prior to OCI and then followed up after OCI? or did you just start mailing them once you struck out?Anonymous User wrote:I massed mailed one secondary market where I had connections and NYC. that's sort of what i've been doing too- I have strong ties in Boston and Miami and I started mailing them but I've heard those markets are even harder than NY, so thought I should focus more time on NY. I've been mailing DC too (i'm at GULC) and no bites there either. i'm only at 100 MM so far though.. but seeing that other people have gotten responses makes me feel like i'm doing this all wronghoos89 wrote:You should mass mail all major markets and any secondary market to which you have ties. Nope - I just started mass mailing I think on 8/13 - so two weeks after OCI.
I think emailing is best, but if you don't get a response within like a week I would maybe fill out the online app. Just my opinion.
As for the firms that I emailed that went to my school's OCI: I did not communicate with them before or during OCI. They only know about me from mass mailing.
So basically, I only started MM after I struck out. And the firms I have callbacks with are from my MM firms from only a week ago. It is not too late. Network like CRAZY, talk to career services. Also, I think mid-law may have a bit of a different timeline and processes, so talk to CSO about that too. For the record, my CSO did not tell me to MM and they didn't seem to get it when I told them I was. So take what they say with a grain of salt, but definitely at least get their advice and ask for alumni connections.

Re: Mass Mailing
thank you so so much for this information i really appreciate it- it gives me so much hope. but i did speak to career services, they told me to give up on getting a biglaw job.. and told me to wait to apply to 'small firms'.. so I think i'm done taking their advice. But i'm definitely going to start networking more tomorrow and hope that there's still some spots left for me.. But how many firms did you mass mail in total? and did you tailor your cover letters? sorry for all the questions! just want to make sure i'm doing everything rightAnonymous User wrote:Anonymous User wrote:thank you for your response! Re: Mass Mailing
To clarify, I've had five callbacks, with three more coming up. I'm worried because it's been 3 weeks since my first one, but I have not been outright dinged by any of the firms. I will ramp up on mailing but so far I've had 0% success with any NYC applications. I was skeptical of resume collect but I actually got two screeners out of it and converted those to CB's.Anonymous User wrote:T-14 I've mailed over 450 firms and only received 1 screener. 80 wont cut it

Re: Mass Mailing
Updating here to say I got two offers today. Not my top choices so now I have to meet with career services to come up with a plan on how to reach out to my other pending callbacks. First offer was from OCI, the second from OCI resume collect that ended up being a phone screener, then a in-firm callback.manda wrote:To clarify, I've had five callbacks, with three more coming up. I started mass mailing in June through the middle of July, receiving either dings or silence (mostly silence). I didn't follow up with many, except for a few for an off campus interview program to let them know I would be in the area. No bites from mass mailing at all.
