What time can you play loud music in your office, with the door closed?
If it's 7PM and you're working, can you play music loud enough that people within 20 feet of your office can barely hear it? I play pop music, Drake Catching Feelings stuff like that.

Not if other people are working. Buy a pair of beats.

Those are distracting. I work best with music from speakers. I feel like at some hour, I should be able to treat my office like my apartment. 7PM? 9PM? 10PM?

Whenever no one is around you to hear it.
Might be 7 pm on a friday, might be midnight if your neighbor is staying late.
This is a silly question.

Exactly this.PMan99 wrote:Whenever no one is around you to hear it.

You don’t have an independent right to treat your office like your apartment regardless of whether anyone else is around. It’s still your office and if there are other people around you still have to act accordingly. This is part of why working late sucks, precisely because you’re not at home.

(Or of course ask anyone who’s there if they mind your music, although I still wouldn’t play it where people outside your office can hear it.)

Why can’t You can play the music on a lower volume level?
Or put your headphones in so others can’t hear?

agreed. get headphones or at least stop playing top 40 crap and put it at a lower level so it's only audible to those inside your office with the door shut

Biglaw is so suffocating. So I want to play some music after 7pm so what? Why does that me "that guy?"Anonymous User wrote:go into the offices next door when noone is there and test. some of these walls aren't super thick.

if it's so suffocating go home and work from home and play Drake at 1000 decibels if you'd prefer.

Because if there are other people there working they don’t want to listen to your music and it may actively distract them from getting their own work done? This isn’t a biglaw thing, it’s a normal grownup working in an office with other human beings thing.Anonymous User wrote:Biglaw is so suffocating. So I want to play some music after 7pm so what? Re: What time can you play loud music in your office, with the door closed?
Because biglaw is also suffocating for the people who work next to you who now have to deal with listening to distracting music that they'd prefer not to be listening to. If there's no one around you to hear it, then yeah it's probably fine, but if it's only 7:00 then there's a chance that there are others around who will be subjected to it. Your aversion to headphones doesn't outweigh someone's aversion to not have to listen to someone else's music. This is common courtesy. You won't be "that guy" for trying to make your time in the office a little less unpleasant for yourself; you'll be "that guy" for making someone else's time in the office a little more unpleasant.Anonymous User wrote:Biglaw is so suffocating. This is pretty black and white. You can't play music out loud if others are around and can hear it. Doing so makes you a bad co-worker. You can either wear headphones, not listen to music, or work in your apartment, but the office isn't your apartment.

Firms should have a rule about this. Like "music cannot exceed xx db at 10 feet from your office." My Iphone has a decibel meter.

Pretty sure that would be 0 dB at ten feet from your office.Anonymous User wrote:Firms should have a rule about this. Like "music cannot exceed xx db at 10 feet from your office." My Iphone has a decibel meter.

this has to be a troll right? OP you are some next level entitled garbage. Do you cut in line on the reg too?
Nobody else wants to hear your music, use headphones. You can treat your office like your apartment when you pay the rent.

The loud conversations I hear are louder than the music I play.PeanutsNJam wrote:this has to be a troll right? OP you are some next level entitled garbage. Do you cut in line on the reg too?

That type of music sends me into Hulk-smash rage. Seriously, I hate it. Perhaps a rainmaker partner on your floor does too. Buy a nice set of noise-canceling headphones if you want rock out.Anonymous User wrote:If it's 7PM and you're working, can you play music loud enough that people within 20 feet of your office can barely hear it? 7:00PM is basically still regular office hours at a lot of firms. You can probably do what you want at 3AM unless you are next to the rest of the deal/trial team.

No no you misunderstand. Drake catching feelings is not had hardcore rap. https://youtu.be/DRS_PpOrUZ4?t=2m16s It's pop music.nealric wrote:That type of music sends me into Hulk-smash rage. No, I think you misunderstand. I very much like hardcore rap. If I were a partner, I would think highly of an associate listening to it. Besides, C.R.E.A.M. is basically a biglaw anthem at this point.Anonymous User wrote:No no you misunderstand.
