malpractice insurance?

do associates at biglaw firms have their own malpractice insurance? or is it all covered/handled by the firm and the partners?

That will be completely handled by the firm and the partnership on a headcount basis. You won't have to worry about that at a biglaw firm.

In almost any firm (big or small) the partners deal with and provide malpractice insurance. The only time this becomes dicey is if you have a loose “of counsel” relationship with a firm.
