How does Axinn NYC compare to other firms?
I know it’s boutique but is the quality of work / reputation in its practice areas on par with, say, the V5?

My (limited) impression is the work is quite high caliber. Axinn is mostly antitrust and IP but elite within those areas. The firm is young and intense. Highly regarded within its practices. Definitely seems to be long hours and high pressure.

If you are interested in doing antitrust, Axinn is better than most of the V5 firms (on par with Skadden or Wachtell, better than Cravath, SullCrom, or Latham). I can't speak to how the IP practice is regarded.
You should be very confident you're interested in doing antitrust work however if you go there. If you go in, and find it's too math heavy for you or something, it may not be a great experience. As an added bonus, you will probably be doing more interesting work at Axinn than you would be doing as an antitrust associate at any V5 (or V20) firm. This is because they're an a la carte antitrust shop, so when they do get work, it tends to be pretty interesting. They're not just specialists who the M&A teams turn to when they need help.
