Let’s hear the no offer stories of Summer 2018
I have not heard anything about no offers for Summer 2018. My entire summer class recieved offers on Friday, so I have nothing to report. NALP won’t be able to provide this summer’s stats to students participating in the OCI 2018 season, so let’s keep firms honest here and now. Has anyone recieved a no offer or heard of someone who recieved a no offer this summer?
Also, any news of cold offers would be helpful to students, as this information will never be available to students through NALP. For those who don’t know the difference, a cold offer is an offer on paper, but the firm makes clear that you should probably look elsewhere for work. This allows the firm to report a 100% offer rate to NALP (assuming they only use cold offers rather than no offers).
UPDATE (8/1/18)
Let’s summarize what we’ve heard so far.
- 3 no offers from Norton Rose (no info on which offices)
- 1 no offer from Clifford Chance (NY office)
- 1 cold offer from Paul Weiss (NY office)
- 1 termination mid-summer at Fried Frank for sexual harassment (NY office)
- 1 no offer at some troll’s imaginary law firm for untreated acne
If anyone can confirm the above with details or provide additional information on other no/cold offers, please share.

That is typical of them. They always no offer a bunch each year. Why people go summer there unless its their literal only choice always boggles my mind.Anonymous User wrote:Heard of 3 no-offers from Norton Rose.

Cold offer at PW NY, but well warranted based on the rationale I heard for it.

Fried Frank NY allegedly straight-up fired a summer (not a no offer) for repeated sexual harassment. Don’t know any more than that.

I've always wondered - what is a cold offer? Something like: "We're giving you an offer because we want to have a 100% offer rate, but you won't last long if you accept it so we encourage you to find another job"?Cold offer at PW NY, but well warranted based on the rationale I heard for it.
Just seems like an odd tactic to me.

Yup, that's it. Although, I think I read on these forums of some guy just going back to the firm he was cold-offered at and apparently was fine.. lolAnonymous User wrote:I've always wondered - what is a cold offer? We just no-offered a 1L summer due to a really bad case of untreated acne.

Basically they say they are giving you an offer but think you'd be happier elsewhere.Anonymous User wrote:I've always wondered - what is a cold offer? Seems YMMV on accepting a cold offer. In some circumstances, by the time you actually start things have changed and it's not a problem at all. It may be the group you were matched to was slow during that summer but picks up by the following year. In others, it's not a real offer- they are really just no-offering you but allowing you to say you got an offer during 3L recruiting. It may be they didn't like your work but want to keep a 100% offer rate anyways. Since cold-offers are always a hush-hush sort of thing, any public knowledge is mostly the product of the rumor mill.

Re: Let’s hear the no offer stories of Summer 2018
Friend at NRF told me the firm is "trying" to focus on making their NY office a place people want to go after their merged last year. As a result for 2017 NRF was like 41/42 summer offers and 100% in their NY office. I'd be surprised of 3 no-offers but after their partner drain the past year I also wouldn't be.Anonymous User wrote:That is typical of them. They always no offer a bunch each year. one no-offer at clifford chance new york. details are a bit murky, but nothing patently obvious.

This gotta be a troll post - it's one thing to be dressed/acted unprofessionally, but untreated acne?Anonymous User wrote:We just no-offered a 1L summer due to a really bad case of untreated acne.

No offer at Cahill last summer. Similar the poster above re PW, it may have been justified.
