Re: Second Year Associate - Need to Lateral ASAP

I'd probably apply far and wide. A geography switch is a pretty understandable reason to leave a firm, so I don't think it would be met with much skepticism. The lateral market will probably start heating up in the next 2-3 months but it's possible to find something now. I'd get in touch with a recruiter that you've gotten good vibes from or talk to someone you trust who has left to see if they used a recruiter. A recruiter is going to be your best friend in this type of situation as they can do blind submissions and get insight on open positions that you might not be privy to. I'd also consider looking for a clerkship--sometimes there are last minute openings for the fall. In fact, I was just looking a few weeks ago and I saw a couple. That would buy you time and also make you more competitive for positions when your clerkship is over. Sorry this is happening to you. Just don't lose hope; you'll bounce back as long as you're persistent.

You were cum laude at a T14 and are an Associate at a V50 firm? You're going to have no problem finding a good job. Also, Seattle, Portland and Denver are hardly small markets.

That really sucks. I second what the person above said about recruiters and clerkships. Also, there is a fair amount of legal recruiting starting to be done on linkedin and lawcrossing now, so check those everyday as well. Also don’t feel afraid to ask the partners for any connections - they may have an incentive to help you so that you remain on good terms with the firm. Try to negotiate another three months of website time as well. Finally, your law school network can also help - you might not want to tell them what happened (maybe spin it as a geographic switch).but firms also give referral bonuses to people if they bring in candidates. Again, sorry to hear about this, hope you find something soon.
