Wow his thread hits home/is a tremendously good outlet for people I think. I struggled with suicidal ideations since high school. Was on anti depressants for about a decade (16-26) and have been off for about three years. The struggle is real, and this profession can def exacerbate underlying problems.

I hate my job so much and it was driving me, once again, to suicidal thoughts. I'm huge into fitness, and I felt my youth dwindling away as I spent hours sitting in a chair in front of a computer. Because I'm obsessive about it, I still work out every day but it takes a lot more effort after a long day of law. The stress was also eating away at my physical and mental health. I still have panic attacks some mornings before work and sometimes feel the urge to just fucking cry when I'm at work (I'm a jockish male, which makes me feel even weirder about it). But I decided to quit this profession in a few months, and that has cut my stress. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. If you really love this job, that's awesome. But for those sticking with it for some reason like prestige or income, if possible, I'd say get out while you're young. Life's too short.

I made an attempt last year. Sent to the hospital and committed into the psych ward. I was put on suicide watch or something. The nurses first opened my shirt and unzipped my pants to check if something dangerous could be hidden. I need to press a button and call the nurses each time I need to use the bathroom, so that the nurse could go to the bathroom with me. If I need to shower, the nurse would stand right outside the shower curtain to keep an eye on me.

For the following 10 days or so, these people opened the door and checked me every 20 mins. I had nothing to do but sleep. Except being disturbed all the time, no one really came to talk to me. There was no privacy at all. I assume incarceration must be something similar. Kinda feel bad for those guys who need to be incarcerated for decades.

The take-away of the story: don't try unless you're 100% sure you can succeed, otherwise the best case scenario you're gonna be "incarcerated" like me for at least a couple of weeks, and worst case scenario, you'll end up handicapped - permanent head damage, paralyzed, amputated, to list a few. And there's no method which could guarantee 100%, even with pistol or jumping from the Golden Gate.

Btw, the suicide attempt was made due to reasons irrelevant to law school. Struggled with suicidal thoughts since elementary school, so it wasn't situational.
