Violated NY Bar misconduct rule. What to do?
Sorry for throwing this thread among all the excitement about salary raise... But I just received a notice of charges from the NY State Board of Law Examiners. It charges me for using speed up add-on when watching the NYLC videos, which I did. I didn't realize it was a violation of the rule. Any advice on how to proceed? Should I just admit to the allegations and see what happens? Will it be a problem to admission? I'm in serious panic mode.

Re: Violated NY Bar misconduct rule. What to do?
Don't suppose you took notes during the CLE? It would probably be really good if you could demonstrate that you were at least in active attendance. I guess it would also help if it's only a few hours and you have carryover CLE credits such that you would have sufficient with or without the video.
They can find out what the bar wants from you. Hopefully you weren't watching at a crazy speed like 4x or 5x.
CLE in most states is time based. Trying to do it more to get full credit for less time is likely to be frowned upon.
I agree with the others, get an attorney and open a dialog quickly. My thoughts above are really things I'd start to ponder before talking with counsel. I'd not respond to them here.

Well first of all you will need a professional licensing defense lawyer. Get whatever advice they have to say as they will likely know how the boards will react to this and what would typically be the sanction (if any). With that being said you will have to decide for yourself what is the best path forward. Most importantly though DO NOT LIE about anything - that will just make the matter worse and you are probably going to have to own up to this. During the audit they must have realized how much the time stamps indicated and they are going to know this so there is no point in downplaying and certainly not lying. Just be honest and hope for the best but see what your lawyer has to say. Best chance is to repeat what you said here in that you didn't realize that it was a rule which is required to be followed and that your intentions were not nefarious in anyway you already understood the material but you should have watched the videos more intently. Good Luck

MANY of my friends got cease and desist letters for doing this. They’re all barred now.

Were you barred and you got this or were you just applying? Not sure if I did this but don't think so as I'm not tech savvy

Hey Everybody, same story as above happened to my friend.
Any tips except of hiring an attorney. That is what she is planning to do, but maybe someone heard or had similar situation and want to share experience. or maybe any referrals to an attorney who dealt exact with the same situation.
Thank you in advance for taking time and sharing some experience.

This happens all the time. If you admit your wrongdoing and apologize, all you have to do is watch all the videos again (at normal speed this time).

As a non-NY person, what are these videos, and why would they even give you the option of speeding up the videos if it against the rules? Or is it not something they can control? This seems really weird/silly on NY's part.

They don’t give you the option and you are warned several times that speeding the videos up is misconduct. I don’t know why people think they won’t get caught.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Sep 07, 2022 2:37 amAs a non-NY person, what are these videos, and why would they even give you the option of speeding up the videos if it against the rules? Are you actually using your real email address to seek an uncommon amount of detail about what happens if you’ve committed an ethics violation?l.ning1@wustl.edu wrote: ↑Wed Sep 07, 2022 10:32 pmCould you please share in details? I posted a couple days ago advising that person to not use their personal email address as their username and suggesting that the mods might want to delete the post so others wouldn't see that someone using their real email address was asking about ethics advice. Instead, the mods deleted my post, though I am still not sure why.Monochromatic Oeuvre wrote: ↑Thu Sep 08, 2022 2:20 amAre you actually using your real email address to seek an uncommon amount of detail about what happens if you’ve committed an ethics violation?l.ning1@wustl.edu wrote: ↑Wed Sep 07, 2022 10:32 pmCould you please share in details? You asked the mods to delete a post so they deleted a post. What's the problem.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 10:14 amI posted a couple days ago advising that person to not use their personal email address as their username and suggesting that the mods might want to delete the post so others wouldn't see that someone using their real email address was asking about ethics advice.
