Small, seems like most young people roll off clerkships. Suprisingly prestigious schools for philly IMO. Particularly for younger associates.

I would guess quality and substantive work opportunities.

Chambers associates pegs starting salary at $135k. Which is low in my opinion since most biglaw firms have moved up to $160-180k range in philly after holding at $145k for many years is my understanding. I wonder if the information is just dated. However $135k seemed about right for the non Amlaw200 firms in philly.

Cool, that makes sense. I appreciate the insight. 135k is a bit low. Vault has them at 150k, which sounds about right for Philly. Yeah, I guess I'll have to ask them all these questions at the CB.

I have no idea. This was my post, actually, from 7 years ago. I'm still in Philly. I think I dodged a bullet personally. Seems like a place that sounds good if you're into prestige but might not really get you anywhere after. I'm involved in a lot of Philly things, and I never hear their name pop up for anything. FWIW. Perhaps I'm just salty because they didn't give me an offer.

Would love your impression of the Philly market for post-clerkship applicants, especially smaller/boutique firms. Which ones would you tell yourself seven years ago to take a close look at?

Plenty of big deal Philly lawyers first made partner at Hangley Aronchick. Off the top of my head, I can think of a recent City Solicitor (not assistant) and a sitting Third Circuit judge. It's a very well-respected firm.

They do pay below market, though I'm not sure how much. Seems like better odds of partnership than the few market-paying shops in town, though.

For defense-side litigation, the best are Dechert and Morgan Lewis. Dechert's Supreme Court practice is growing, if you have the credentials for that. Morgan Lewis is maybe slightly less of a slog for partnership and probably has more local clients (those things may be related).
Kirkland recently opened up shop and has been hiring in the products/mass torts space. The lawyers they have been hiring are excellent. Presumably the work product will be as well.
Faegre is very good and actually makes partners of its associates. Both of those items are also true for Hangley.
Cozen might also be worth looking at, though their mix of work is not for me.

I’m biased because I’m a plaintiffs lawyer but if it were me, I’d shoot for the PI shops. They make more money than biglaw partners, many even at the associate level do.

This is appealing to me, and I assume many others. Do you (or anyone) know how much below market or how much better hours?

If that’s appealing to you, I’d go for it. When I did my CB, people did seem to feel it was a good place to work. I glanced at their website and it seems they’ve had trouble in recent years attracting the same prestige of associate, likely because market comp exploded since I interviewed.
