billable hours

Post by Anonymous User » Fri May 04, 2018 10:58 pm

Hi all,
I'm a 1L who just picked a summer side job doing contractual legal research projects. I am to bill my hours- could anybody provide some guidance as to what goes in these sheets, or provide an example? I am unclear as to how detailed to get. Any other guidance would be helpful. Thanks!

Why not ask them for a sample? Without knowing what you are specifically doing. Could be as simple as:

Conduct legal research re: [topic]; draft summary memorandum to A. Partner re same.

Definitely ask for a sample. Some partners (and clients) have specific phrasing they want or need.

Correspond with X re Y
Confer with X re Y
Conduct research re X
Conduct interview with X re Y
Work on draft of X
Edit draft of X according to comments from Y
Review X

That covers about 95% of my time entries.

100% agree with those saying ask for a sample.

Writing a brief, drafting an external email, etc., it's always helpful to take a look at what the standard for your org is - that way if you're not exceeding it (in a good way), you're at least meeting it.
