Hey all,
Next week, I will have a phone screener for a biglaw lateral spot. Didn’t realize this was a thing. Was passed along by a partner (so I think it’s ublikely I’d fail the “pulse” test). Still, in the past, my screeners have all been a couple of associates in person.
What should I expect from this? What are they looking to get out? How should I prep?
Thanks!

Is it with a partner? Sounds like it. If so, just prepare for a normal biglaw lateral interview. It'll be exactly that. If it's with a recruiter, just plan for a slightly less practice-specific, detail-oriented version of the same. But definitely treat it like a real interview, as that is what it is.

Just be prepared to talk about your practice. Besides looking for a personality fit, they are primarily trying to make sure your practice dovetails with their such that you will be able to hit the ground running if you start there.

Mmm what if it doesn’t? Best way to combat that? Offer to drop a couple class years?nealric wrote:Just be prepared to talk about your practice. Why would you want the job if you aren't a good fit? I wouldn't even consider offering to drop class years unless and until you are getting into final negotiations and class year is a sticking point. Usually, class year drops are only on the table if the candidate making a significant practice area switch where they may lack crucial substantive knowledge needed to perform at class level (i.e. corporate to real estate or lit to bankruptcy).objctnyrhnr wrote:Mmm what if it doesn’t? You should have a good understanding of their practice (as good as possible) before you arrive at the interview and try to tailor your responses to showing how your experience fits in.
