Reality of Dating in Biglaw?

Post by Anonymous User » Thu Apr 05, 2018 12:10 pm

I will be practicing corporate biglaw in a major legal market on the east coast. As a currently single person, I'm curious to know what are the realities of dating as a biglaw associate and developing a real relationship rather than one-off dates with random people off dating apps? Or is that the rule, rather than the exception?

(I know there is another forum out there on this topic, but it devolved into a dumpster fire and got locked against further posting. Hoping this thread does not devolve and provides real answers, stories.)

I don't think this issue really exists, ime. People understand that if you're going to date people with intense jobs, rescheduling dates with some frequency comes with the territory. In New York, at least, there a glut of single professionals in the same scenario. People in less intense careers may be less understanding, but, oh well.

It is fine. It may be hard to make plans sometimes, and sometimes when you do make plans you'll still need to cancel due to work. But if you're the type of person who has in the past been able to develop relationships and you find a partner who is willing to work with you, you'll be fine. There are plenty of people in BigLaw and other industries who don't develop "real" relationships, and some of them blame their work, but there are also plenty of people who are successful in their careers and manage to develop successful relationships with people.

I am in a somewhat similar boat but I can tell you certain things that I know from personal experience as someone who worked over 2,700 hours in a calendar year. Dating in that situation on your end is about 1 thing, time management.

When someone says they are too busy, believe them. They are too busy because they choose to do something other than date with their free time. If you want to date, you certainly can, but you will need to make it a priority to see someone and make demonstrable efforts to show that person that they are a priority of your free time. Do that and if you are actually seeing someone worth seeing, it'll work out.
