Safe to assume no bonuses here? Also confused by the references to the Milbank versus Cravath scale - do I remember correctly that Milbank raised, Cravath increased, and Milbank has been silent since?

At another "women-led boutique" so a bit curous about Kaplan's move...

I wouldn't be surprised if there is some market bifurcation but I'd bet those two will match. Especially as Kirkland has 700 Chicago attorneys that just got a raise

Yeah, zero chance that Sidley does not match, as it clings dearly to its oft-repeated tagline that it and K&E are the “Big 2” in Chicago. Mayer Brown would probably love to not match, but Winston matching Milbank (and presumably matching Cravath in time) will put the heat on since MB considers themselves equals of Winston. I can see the McDermott / Baker McKenzie / Katten tier either not match or not fully match. There will probably be a lot of pressure though because it’s likely that much more profitable firms with smaller Chicago outposts (e.g. Paul Hastings, Ropes, Proskauer) will match Cravath.

Anonymous User wrote:I don't understand how Jones Day has managed to stay relevant with its black box compensation model. Sure they should be able to recruit some first-years who didn't do enough research and saw that they pay market, but how on earth are there any mid-level or senior associates still working at that firm? I also assume that they not many laterals come into the firm aside from those finishing up clerkships because I've heard they get a pretty sweet deal actually
Presumably because those mid-level or senior associates know what the standard salary scale is, so even though their compensation is black box they know if they're being compensated equally or better than the market.

this only makes sense if all of their mid levels are being paid at or above market, which obviously they are not
There's a few reasons I see:

Raises at JD come in June, not January like other firms. So you actually move up in class year about 6 months before everyone else. This makes it harder to compare yourself with the market.

Some midlevels/seniors are paid hugeee salaries. The JD associate who joined the Trump administration last year disclosed an 800k salary from JD.

Some people, like myself, prefer salary over bonus and are willing to take less total comp for predictability. THere's less games to play, you odn't have to work about leaving money on the table. I don't work at JD but I lateraled last year to big fed from a peer firm and it was huge headache trying to line up my exit to make sure I got my year end bonus. After going thorugh that, I can really appreciate just getting paid straight salary.
This is credited. Other reasons are that some people like the Jones Day culture, and the firm makes a lot more partners than other big law firms.

In what weird upside-down forum world does calling out trolls and asking people to read before asking draw criticism? Maybe people are right about TLS going downhill...

A world where this thread is such a hilariously off topic mess that asking anyone to read the past thirty pages of hookers, discussion of the poverty rate and coming revolution, and firm smack talk by law students, to find actual news is objectively unreasonable.

Is today the day that the rest of the ~V30 start to fall into line or are we looking at another week of consideration before we hear? I'm thinking we'll get a flood today since bid lists are due soon.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
