2L Without a Job

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Jan 31, 2018 11:43 am

Hello,

I'm a 2L currently without a job. I'm just wondering what should be my plan of action? I'd love to get Big-Law and I've been Mass Mailing, but I'm wondering if I'm wasting my time. I'm getting a variety of emails back from recruiters whom have already filled their class. As a 2L in Feb what should be my plan of action? Stop Massmailing? Mass Mail harder? Start looking at companies?

Not enough info.

What school, or school rank range? What's your GPA? What did you do last summer?

Big law very doubtful.

Use simplicity.

Should be targeting smaller/medium firms & companies at this point. Reach out to alumni at those firms

Everything you do is at the expense of doing something else; even if that is doing nothing. So while it may not be a "waste" of time to continue massmailing, consider what else you could be doing with your time. The odds of you getting a bite through massmailing is slim to none, but if you would otherwise be spending that time watching television, playing video games, or something else unproductive, you may as well just continue masslailing. If on the other hand you would otherwise be reaching out to alumni, going to bar association/CLE events to network, or studying for your classes, I suggest you focus on those things, because they are more likely to positively impact your ability secure a post-graduation job.

I am sure you have heard this elsewhere, but non-biglaw 2L jobs really do appear in droves during Feb, March and April. Make sure your materials are polished, your interviewing skills are on point, and that you have a set of different cover letters targeted and ready to go with some customization! I promise that if you keep checking indeed.com, simplicity, LinkedIN for searches like "legal intern" "summer intern - legal" "legal associate" etc., some really great companies will start to post things soon.

I would also say--if you are going to go the in-house route, try to find out (a) if they hire legal interns for during the 3L school year and (b) if they hire former legal interns full time post-graduation. Some places do this, and that is your best bet toward in-house success post-school.

Separately, if you are at all interested in in-house work that's not litigation, make sure to take contract drafting and any licensing or privacy courses you can. These areas are in very high demand and places hire fresh-out-of-school grads to negotiate contracts and will position you well.

If you're targeting lit, make sure to take employment law, as that is in demand in-house! GL!

(Also, there will be small and mid-sized firms that offer great experience to litigators too--keep an eye out for that!)

I'm guessing that your 3.2 is below median at your school (or maybe right at or slightly above median) - which is probably not good enough from any school outside of the T14, and maybe not good enough even from some of the T14. URM status helps somewhat I think, but probably not to the same extent that it does with admissions to law school.
Sorry to tell you, if you don't already know, but the big law ship has almost certainly sailed. Most if not all summer associate classes are filled. Network your ass off, maybe you get a miracle, but start looking for other jobs too.
