networking with outside counsel
I'm in-house and thinking of making the move to biglaw (if possible). I've indirectly heard from friends' recruiters that the firm I primary use and interact with as outside counsel is looking to hire in my desired practice area. Would it be inappropriate to ask my contacts to get coffee outside of the office and inquire about opportunities at their firm?

I don't see why not, if you have a good relationship with them.
First, you can check the job listings on the firm's website to confirm that they are hiring in your practice area and that you generally fit what they are looking for.
