Surprisingly difficult to find information on this...What is the office situation like at the various NY firms? I heard through the grapevine that Weil has first and second years sharing internal offices and then has them moved to external (but still shared) offices. I know Skadden has shared external offices for a few months but then most first years have solo external offices. What's it like elsewhere?

DPW: Shared external offices, then solo external offices after 3 years
Paul Weiss: Shared external or internal offices, then solo internal office after 1 year, then solo external office after 2 years
Skadden: Shared external offices, then solo external offices after 3-6 months (one window), then double-window external office after 2-3 years
STB: Share external offices, then solo internal offices after 2 years
Stroock: Shared external offices, then solo external offices after 2 years
S&C: Shared external offices, then solo external offices after 3 years

Associates at S&C share external offices until sometime during their third year. Yes, it sucks.

ETA: A lot of us live in downtown Brooklyn (or a bit south or west of downtown Brooklyn).

Do Clearly and S&C have no internal offices for att'ys? Curious how big the office windows are at the firms... the ones I saw in callbacks (Weil, PW, STB) were like tiny prison cell windows.

S&C has only external offices for attorneys and the windows are big. I'd rather have a prison cell window than share an office though, to be honest.

Pw has shared internals and externals first year, solo internal second year, and solo external beginning third year. Also don't get the prison cell vibe but whatever.

Associates at S&C share external offices until sometime during their third year. Yes, it sucks.

Same (or worse) at DPW. At least in the groups I've sat with/near.

At Cravath you share an external office first 2 years then get your own external office. There are no internal offices for attorneys.

In reality, many people get a two-person office to themselves 12-18 months in, then have to share it with a summer associate the second summer, before getting a real one-person office around your two-year anniversary.

That's what I got at Stroock.

I actually didn't mind sharing that much, but I was friends with my officemate before we even started. It was nice to have someone to commiserate to or ask questions of. Sharing with the summer wasn't bad, as it was a way to get to know them before they started permanently. I can imagine a bad roommate situation occurring, which would make things considerably less pleasant. Personally, the window was absolutely key- I did the DOJ summer program where many attorneys had internal offices- drove me bonkers and that was only a 9-5.
