3L Hiring Process, general questions

Post by JDB90 » Sat Aug 26, 2017 10:22 am

I go to a T6 and am fielding offers for a SA in 2018. A friend who is a third year associate switched firms after his SA, he wanted to live in a different geographic area. He didn't have an issue with it as far as I can tell.

It's probably not common for people to jump around after their SA. Is there a stigma if they do? I see lots of V50s looking for 3Ls in various positions at their firms. Some schools allow 3Ls to OCI with firms again too. Do students do this and why? Is it strictly for geographic moves or do they do it for particularly coveted firms?

I personally know several people who moved firms 3L for solely "prestige" reasons (i.e., not because of geographic or fit concerns). I don't think there's any "stigma," except insofar as you may burn a bridge with your SA firm, which shouldn't be a big deal.

You can (and should) seek out alternative opportunities in your 3L, if that's something that would benefit you.

Some of my friends moved because their SA firm didn't have a robust practice area in their desired field of law. Others moved for geographic or purely prestige reasons.
