Is it possible to lateral after only one year?
My boyfriend has an offer in NYC, and the firm is a boutique only in NYC.
My job is in LA. Because I'm a year ahead, I'll have a year to work before he graduates.
Is it possible to lateral to NYC biglaw from LA biglaw for a 'no-hard-feelings' reason after only a year?
What should I consider when doing this?

Can't you intra-firm transfer?Anonymous User wrote:My boyfriend has an offer in NYC, and the firm is a boutique only in NYC.

Sure, especially with such a good reason.

The practice area I was hired into isn't represented in the NY office.Anonymous User wrote:Can't you intra-firm transfer?Anonymous User wrote:My boyfriend has an offer in NYC, and the firm is a boutique only in NYC.

It's not unheard of, but it will be difficult/unlikely. Lateral market for 1st years is almost non-existent.

I dont' think it will be as hard as people think. Remember the OP will be lateraling as a second year, not a first year. So sure, not your most marketable period ever (that starts more like your third year) but certainly doable, especially for a "no hard feelings" reason

I think this is right, but I'm not sure about the difficulties. The problem won't be so much whether NYC biglaw will ask why OP is lateraling, but whether they have any need for a second year lateral. (Plus, assumptions might be made before your cover letter gets read in detail or you get to an interview stage to discuss why you're lateraling.)masque du pantsu wrote:I dont' think it will be as hard as people think.
