Re: ITT we rank firms based on most atrocious opposing counsel
I had a terrible experience with someone in my specialty area at clifford chance. Pretty large M&A deal and he wouldn't accept a single change to any terms, down to a comma. We try scaling back our comments and he comes back with the same exact language. Guy is a complete ass when we try talking on the phone and won't budge an inch. In the meantime, client doesn't really care and just wants to get the deal done. We make no progress and the night before signing, we need to join an all hands on deck call (including both clients) to resolve. We explain what we've been saying for the past month, that we need X, Y, and Z at the bare minimum, and even that isn't market, etc. Clifford guy's response: "That sounds reasonable to me."
Thanks, Clifford guy. Could maybe have saved us some time if you said that about a month ago.

Re: ITT we rank firms based on most atrocious opposing counsel
I've had a pleasant experience with bigger firms. Most of the attorneys jut want to get to the merits and not fight over dumb stuff (i.e., discovery deadlines).
The worst experience I've had has not even been with solos, but with various smaller boutique law firms. The attorneys I've encountered all have this strange "god" complex, as in they're objectively right, regardless of what the facts and law may say.

Ny office? I have found magic firms to be very difficult and always assumed it was so because of limited experience makes them stick at precedent at all cost even if changes would be better for all parties involved.

Pro pers and solos from TTTTs. Although I had a basic negligence case with a very reasonable and not outrageous 2016 Infilaw grad. Compared to the usual ones I deal with, he was great to work with.

I will say - I think it's worse going against incompetent attorneys than competent assholes. On a pro bono matter I was against a small firm in the deep South - every motion looks like it was written by a tenth grader with a weak grasp on both the law and the English language. And I feel like the judge went out of their way to not call them on their bullshit.
I've had dickish opposing counsel from other Big Law firms, but I'll take that any day.

Based on the exhibits I've reviewed while clerking it is 100% without a doubt the shitty small firms.

A 2016 Infilaw grad had a case big enough to demand a legitimate firm's time? And he was actually handling it well?Anonymous User wrote:Pro pers and solos from TTTTs. I am curious by this. Could either of you give any flavor to what makes MTO atrocious to go against?Anonymous User wrote:Seconded.Anonymous User wrote:Munger. by a mile.
I agree with the earlier posters. The most atrocious opposing counsel I have had to deal with are solo practitioners or small plaintiffs' side firms, in particular, those who do employment work. It can be pretty frustrating to deal with insanely overbroad discovery requests, followed by repeated frivolous motions to compels, having to constantly rebut crazy, totally unsupportable legal theories, and irrational settlement demands.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
