Govt Agency, 2 Interviews, Reference Check

Post by Anonymous User » Thu Apr 06, 2017 7:34 pm

Interviewed with a Government Agency last month. Screener and callback. Now they asked for three references. Is this indicia of a forthcoming offer?

Give them some references. At least three. Hth.

ETA: Employers don't generally check references for people they've already decided to ding, but references also aren't just a formality, either. There's really no way to know.

Summered w/ a federal agency and they called my references a day after I provided them. Then, offer less than a week later. I think often at this point they have mostly made up their mind, but they check references to see if there is any reason NOT to hire you.

OP - Any other anecdotes? Has any one had their refs checked after 2 interviews with a gov't agency and not received an offer? PS. I'm a lateral from another gov't agency.

I had my references checked within a couple hours of my in-person interview (after phone interview) and got an offer that same afternoon.

Same happened to me. There were issues with my references (meaning they were unresponsive, not that they gave bad reviews). They finally got through and I basically got an offer before the third reference even got back to my eventual employer. This is a good thing.

They're likely doing this to get you excited and then reject you after you got your hopes up. Bastards.
