Currently a 3rd year associate in tax in NYC looking to make a lateral move down to Texas (would be happy with Austin, Dallas or Houston). I'm not too picky with where I end up but I'd appreciate it if anyone had some thoughts on firms with better tax practices in any of those cities as well as any insights on culture, exit opps etc.
Thanks!

Re: Best firms for Tax in Texas?
It's generally the usual suspects for the bigger Texas deals (i.e. BB/VE). Given the relatively small size of tax departments, it's somewhat difficult to give advice without talking about individuals. You can PM me if you have Houston questions.
Also, for what it's worth, Austin biglaw tax is probably not realistic at the associate level. You are probably choosing Dallas or Houston. Some people like both cities, but many will have a specific preference. I'd recommend getting to know the cities and deciding where you'd like to end up.

In Houston, you have a variety of firms that do sophisticated tax work - from BB/VE to Latham/KE/etc. In Dallas, most firms only have a couple people that do tax work - usually because their tax group is in a different office than Dallas. For example, BB/VE/AK all have a few tax people in Dallas, but the larger tax presence by far will be in their Houston office. Similar situation for the national satellites in Dallas. TK has the biggest tax group in Dallas by far.
