Surprise summer associate salary advance. Is this standard?

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Mar 28, 2017 10:26 pm

As a 1L summer, Blank Rome advanced me 1 week's pay about a week or two before the summer program started. I plan on being pretty poor towards the end of the semester so I'm curious as it whether this is standard practice. I will be at a different firm this summer.

How did they know your account? Did they just send a check in the mail? Firms are usually super clear about this kind of stuff, and you have to usually request an advance.

It was a paper check that was included with welcome materials.

No, that is not standard.

Sure, but did the "offer" come in the form of an unsolicited paper check that arrived in the mail?

No. That, admittedly, is pretty weird

You're going to be at another firm? So you turned down their offer after they gave you a check?

Or you turned them down already and then they gave you a check?

I think s/he got the check last summer when s/he summered at Blank Rome, and wants to know if its typical and if s/he can expect a similar check this year prior to starting at a different firm.

I don't have experience with asking for advances but I'm sure if you tell your firm you can't make rent the month before your SA starts, they'll help you out.

It won't be that bad and I don't want to ask. It would have been nice but oh well.

Jones Day gave out some relocation stipends for last summer's SAs. I think it was like 1k minus taxes or something. The advance is probably meant to help with moving expenses
