Yes and no. Partners don't get paid like associates do. Even at a big law firm, partners can go months at a time without seeing any income. Perhaps he had a desperate need for cash, and couldn't wait a year (or however long) for his partnership income.

For the most part, it's much less a "whether" and more of a "when". Realistically, a firm as large and successful as AG probably has a pretty regular share distribution schedule, and I doubt they miss many payouts--so it seems unlikely to me (though I'm far from an expert) that in this particular case, this guy was hurting for that particular reason. Then again, who knows really?

Probably not the end of this story as this Akin Gump partner had been involved for some time in whistleblower suits/matters prior to leaving the DOJ.

Unfortunately his protector was just fired from the DOJ.
