I struck out at OCI, mass mailed 300 firms, got invited in by a biglaw one, and got an offer.
I am a 2L...I think you are asking about 3Ls looking for post-grad employment... so maybe this isn't relevant.

only success was applying through open job posts on simplicity

Yes. A relative received an interview from the same prominent DC firm that had offered a paralegal position after graduating undergraduate school.

Yeah I got interviews as a 3L at v5-100. I hustled like a motherfucker though.

I got 3 biglaw offers during the summer after 1L before OCI from mass mailing firms in my market (non-NY). I had average grades from MVP. This made OCI a breeze, as I went in with no pressure.

Yes, but you have to get lucky based on a firm's need. My firm hired two first years in 2016 because unexpected need in different practice groups. They did not lateral and did not otherwise have biglaw jobs. I'm pretty sure the postings were on simplicity.
