Grades enough for a 1L SA?

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Jan 10, 2017 8:08 pm

Just got grades back at NYU and ended up A, A, B+. It comes out to about 3.78. I was feeling really good until I got the B+ back last. Knowing how hard a 1L SA is to get, will I still be in the running at least as far as grade cutoffs are concerned? Not diversity or any of that, so I am basically under the impression I had to be flawless to have a chance.

What's your rank and where do you want to SA?

Well, median is around 3.2-3.3, if that helps. Also- I'm a 1L at NYU and I have no grades whatsoever back. Did all of yours come in today?

I have no idea what my rank is. NYU doesn't tell you. I'd like to get one at a solid NY firm.

Just mass mail and find out. What possible purpose could anonymous people's opinions matter here?

Some people here seem to have experience and knowledge about how these things work, and I wanted their opinions so I had an idea of what to expect. If there isn't much of a chance, I'd rather know now.

Yes, here is your pat on the back. But good grades != 1L SA unless you bust your ass sending out apps. Frankly, should have already been sending them out and updating once the grades come in.

There is no statistical correlation that I'm aware of between grades and 1L SAs, because 1L SAs are so much more competitive and based on certain metrics (diversity, IP, tax, etc.) mostly. Your grades are well above NYU's median, which makes you definitely competitive for any firm considering hiring 1Ls outside those factors. As such, research which firms will hire 1Ls, do your best to determine if those are unique hires like diversity hiring, and apply to all of them anyway. The worst thing that can happen is you don't land a 1L SA, which does nothing to affect your chances of overall employment following graduation. It's great to get a 1L SA, but it means relatively little for future hiring.

TL:DR You're trying to read tea leaves to prepare yourself for something that you can't predict. People with grades better than yours have likely struck out previously at 1L SAs for whatever reason, and people with worse grades have gotten 1L SAs because they hustled and found the right opportunity and nailed the interview process. All you can do is hustle and see how it shakes out. Anecdotes of success and/or failure are meaningless to your job hunt.

Wasn't smart enough to get into nyu, but smart enough to google:

You probably won't get a 1L SA regardless of what your grades are/were

But stop reading tea leaves and start mass mailing. If you've already finished mass mailing, then stop reading tea leaves and go do something fun. It might happen, it might not. You'll find out soon enough though!

you're well within the top 10% and should be able to get a SA position if you want one.

Just from my experience.... Most people who got 1L SA's (I know) did so in regional markets (their home e.g. Milwaukee, WI).
