Moving Expenses Covered - Possible to Earn Money?
So actually asking this for a friend who is a 3L now, because I have no idea if this works since I never thought of it when I graduated and he asked my advice.
Basically, firm covers all moving expenses, up to something like 3-5k. Move isn't that difficult, same state but different cities. Friend has family members readily available to help move everything, so professional help isn't really needed.
I'm not sure if his firm has a preapproved list of moving companies or if he just submits his receipts and gets reimbursed.
Potential for fraud/pocket money: If he isn't restricted by a preapproved list of companies, he had a thought. Have a family member/friend set up a moving company LLC, "charge" company a reasonable fee, get personally reimbursed by firm.
I had no idea if something like this would work, or if I should just tell him forget it because it's too much trouble for just maybe a few hundred/thousand.
Anyone have thoughts on it?

That was my first reaction and just wanted to be sure sure others agreed. He seemed pretty dead set on it so I didn't want to shoot him down too early.trebekismyhero wrote:A truly terrible idea

To echo, this is so stupid. The amount of work this would take to do and then cover your tracks, and then the risk involved down the line, all to earn 3-5k? That's like literally 1 week's salary.Anonymous User wrote:That was my first reaction and just wanted to be sure sure others agreed. OP also seems like an idiot for even asking this question without first calling his "friend" an idiot.TheSpanishMain wrote:Your "friend" seems like an idiot.

The MPRE doesn't really do what it's supposed to do.

But at least it teaches us not to sleep with clients unless you were already sleeping with them before you started the representation!Bluem_11 wrote:The MPRE doesn't really do what it's supposed to do.

Hope CA doesn't change this rule. I wouldn't have become an attorney if I couldn't sleep with clients.EncyclopediaOrange wrote:But at least it teaches us not to sleep with clients unless you were already sleeping with them before you started the representation!Bluem_11 wrote:The MPRE doesn't really do what it's supposed to do.

scamming own firm. Seems questionable. Also, so much work and effort involved in pulling this off, for a mere 3-5k. Also, if you're caught, you're done

Haha your "friend" could easily end up fired over this, and it could be a major problem for bar application.

I call flame on this post. No one could possibly think this is a good idea.
But tell him to do it and report back.

Sounds like an excellent idea.
He should also get his family to purchase a building in the city, rent it to him, and then ask his firm for a month's rent in relocation costs.

What on God's green earth....
No. Your friend should not attempt to defraud his firm before he starts working there.

He should at least wait until after he's started (but before he has been admitted to the bar). That should speed up his C&F process.emkay625 wrote:Your friend should not attempt to defraud his firm before he starts working there.

Re: Moving Expenses Covered - Possible to Earn Money?
This is obviously a bad idea, but I understand where OP is coming from. It seemed ridiculous to pay what I paid for movers and then have the firm reimburse for a relatively short move from DC to NY. Definitely would have just done it with my brother if there was an option to get even $500 from my firm to not spend multiple times that on movers, but also obviously didn't decide to defraud them.

Flame or not (probably not), morally/ethically right or not, this will most likely work (in my inexperienced opinion)... and not saying OP's friend should do it though
There are reasons not to do this but it would most likely work and it isn't even that hard.
[edit: deleted by me. Just wrote a whole spiel about how easy it is to do this but didn't want to give anyone any ideas]
But don't do it.
Low probability of getting caught x huge magnitude = high risk
Oh. Well there are ethical/moral reasons too.

This is one of the more ridiculous comments i've seen today. DC to NY sounds like a pain in the fucking ass move (parking in nyc, walk ups, etc.). I'll take that reimbursement, give a fat tip, and enjoy a sweat free move.Anonymous User wrote:This is obviously a bad idea, but I understand where OP is coming from.
