How could I become a judge one day after starting in transactional?
Kind of a life career goal for me. Got placed into a transactional group (finance) at my biglaw firm because that's what was hot, wasn't really my choice (though I do like the work and wouldn't mind doing this for a while). If, eventually, I'd like to find my way to the bench, what is the best career path from now on to make that as likely as possible? (Note: My LS grades were pretty meh so jumping into a clerkship isn't terribly likely).

Try your best to quickly jump to lit group, either at current firm or as a lateral.
A lot of government and public service experience. Then community goodwill.
Kozinski has some advice on this (try google).

Yeah I'd try to get to lit. You could go into a type of lit that is similar to your transactional group, and that would tell a coherent story. But if you do transactional for a few years that'll be fine, people bounce around at the start of their career all the time.

^Yes.
It's also helpful to browse judicial bios to see how they got there. After 100 entries or so, you'll see a pattern/trend emerged.

Like the type of judge you want to be one day. For instance, look at bios of fed. district judge if your goal is to be a federal district judge.MCFC wrote:Like, any sort of judge?

Hell, you don't even need to be a practicing attorney apparently.

You thought being an attorney was a prereq? This is Republican politics we're talking about here, c'mon man!

One word: roots. Live and practice in the same circuit for many years, preferably in prosecution and then private practice. Network and become friends with someone in your state's judicial nominating committee. And probably just as important, be of the same political party as the governor.
