First year junior associate at a smallish law firm, Top 50% at T14
1. I want to go to a bigger firm
2. I'm interested in IP transaction
3. I'm patent bar eligible.
However, I haven't taken IP courses and my science is "soft" (think bio/chem/physics) and not engineering/CS
If I take the patent bar, would I have a decent chance to move to a big firm for IP transactions?
Will patent bar help to go from general corporate to IP transactions Forum

Re: Will patent bar help to go from general corporate to IP transactions
I work at a biglaw firm doing tech transactions. I'm not sure what kind of IP transactions you are particularly interested in, but generally the patent bar isn't really relevant to the work at most places unless there is a lot of patent licensing. I have an engineering degree + patent bar and I didn't find it particularly helpful when getting my job.Anonymous User wrote:First year junior associate at a smallish law firm, Top 50% at T14

Patent bar is (for the most part) testing you on your knowledge of patent prosecution rules; it's not going to show anyone that you know your way around a patent or that you understand the history of patent law or case law. So at most it may demonstrate an interest in patent law. It won't make you a better IP transactions lawyer, and few people are going to look at the patent bar and think "Oh wow, this guy is really qualified to do this work" unless you're going into pros (maybe litigation if they care more about your patent knowledge than your lit skills, but many patent lit lawyers get away with not really even having science backgrounds).
