stupid tax question
Can i expect the firm i worked for over the summer to send me a W-2 or do I need to request it?

Will generally send it to you. Pro move is to sign up for electronic access to your paystubs if your firm offers that option -- at the end of the year you'll be able to download your W-2 at your leisure.
