Continue taking work after giving 2 weeks' notice? Need advice!

Post by Anonymous User » Sat Oct 15, 2016 8:28 am

Planning to give my 2-weeks notice this next week (going in-house). Once I give notice, do I continue accepting new work or just focus on winding down and transitioning my current projects to others? I of course would like to leave on good terms (which is why I'm inclined to continue accepting work) but I have a lot to do in terms of packing up/organizing files and getting others up to speed on my projects. I don't want to be in a position where I am rushing to finish projects before IT turns off my credentials. Has anyone been in this situation before?

At least at my 50 lawyer firm, partners only expect you to wrap up existing work and manage the transition of files.

I doubt the firm would even be willing to give you new work. Leaving on good terms here involves making sure everything transitions smoothly. Talk to the partners to discuss what you do know, what you think a good transition plan is, and what questions they have.

When I left, I was only expected to complete active assignments, and even then I got transitioned off most immediately. A gentle reminder of your status will probably be sufficient to avoid more assignments.

Are you junior? It happens at my firm to junior attorneys all the time. They are asked to pinch in on ongoing deals. Harder to do that with more senior people though.
