Transferring offices within firm?

Post by Anonymous User » Sun Oct 09, 2016 7:24 pm

Does anyone here know how feasible it may be to transfer to one of the firm's other offices sometime after the first year. I'll be at an office that I really like, but my wife and I are considering moving to another city in which the firm has an office.

I realize this question is best answered by the firm, but I'm not even close to making this type of decision and thus would prefer not to bring it up yet. If it matters, the firm is Jones Day.

This depends on a number of factors, including how the firm is organized, the needs of the office you want to transfer to and your goodwill within the firm. You probably need to start by talking with HR generally to see if it is even a possibility and then go from there. Many people have these questions, so no one will hold it against you.

I've done this twice, but being extremely risk adverse I went out and got offers in the markets I wanted to go to first. That eliminated my fears of any backlash if the firm was not willing to accommodate and gave me leverage to have the firm pay for the move (many firms don't pay for relocations if the associate initiates the request). The first concern was probably made up, but it was nice to have the firm pick up my moving costs.

A quick note that goodwill is really important. If you are not a problem the firm will likely work with you to meet your request. If you are well respected you can probably find people to fight for you.

Can say with certainty that it's not uncommon for JD associates to transfer offices. Happens every year.
