Bad not to talk about firm at CB lunch?

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Sep 23, 2016 6:24 pm

Wondering if it's a big deal I essentially asked zero questions re: the firm at a CB lunch with some associates. I really spent the time talking about where they live/what they do outside being a lawyer.

Now that I think of it, was it a huge mistake not to ask anything more personal about the firm? Such as ''are billables hard to hit'' ''whyd you choose the firm'' ''what projects did you do as a first year''

Bad or not really?

Did you act like a normal person? Was the conversation interesting? If so, it's irrelevant whether you talked about the firm. They're gauging your personality.

Just one data point. Had a CB lunch where we talked about nothing firm related. Towards the end, they asked if I had any questions and I said that they had pretty much been answered throughout the day. Offer.

I think it varies. I've been on a few of these lunches as a junior associate and I generally prefer to avoid talking about the firm. If I like the person a lot, I might do a bit to sell them on the firm, but otherwise I only talk about the firm if the interviewee brings it up. I usually try to get the interviewee to talk about herself/himself as much as possible, since that's the best way to work out if someone is a weirdo.

I know some people who take themselves very seriously, though, and who seem to think it is a bad thing if the interviewee doesn't ask questions about the firm. I also did a lunch recently with a guy who got anxious at the end because we hadn't talked about the firm at all. He actually asked me if I would give him a negative evaluation because he hadn't asked any questions about the firm.
