This would be a legit issue if the general firm culture was as forgiving and thoughtful. You are shit to them and they will reneg/rescind/fire your ass for a reason or no reason.
There isnt some higher standard of professionalism just cuz ur an idealistic junior who hasnt yet been fucked by a firm.
Op, fuck them and u owe them nothing. Take the best offer like u dgaf.

Re: Accepted Offer - Dream Offer Came Along
OP here. Just wanted to give an update to leave a 'lesson learned' for other students. On Friday, I called the first firm to let the recruiter know that I'll be backing out. It was the most uncomfortable/unpleasant phone conversation of my life. Essentially, the firm had shut down the recruiting (i.e. rejected candidates on the wait list) after it filled the slots, but now have to go back to the drawing board. Recruiter was pissed for all the good reasons. This was 100% on me, so no complaints. Apologized profusely.
In the end, I decided to join the firm in my preferred market. Not sure if this will backfire in the long-term, but a valuable lesson learned. What a boneheaded move on my part. I'll make sure never to repeat a similar mistake in the future.
