Is there a protocol or etiquette for this? As in, can I send off an email or do I need to wait for tomorrow to call?

dude, do you really think there is a difference? It's business. Email and calls are the same. If you email, do you think the recruiter is going to say ''Oh wow, he replied through email? He doesnt seem very appreciative!''
