Sounds like a waitlist. You can lie and say you have an approaching deadline to raise the stakes and put pressure on them.brightthru2014 wrote:So I received an email from a V100 I had a CB interview at, which was neither an offer nor a rejection...and I'm unsure what to make of it:
Wtf? How should I respond to this? What does this mean?Dear [Candidate],
Thank you so much for visiting [Firm] for further interviews. We hope you had an enjoyable day at the Firm. We would like to reiterate our strong interest in your candidacy. Everyone who met with you during your interviews was very impressed. We expect to be in a position to make a final decision on your offer in the next two weeks.
Should you have an approaching deadline, please let us know. Should you wish to discuss your application further, or have any other questions, please feel free to reach out to our Legal Recruiting Department.
Many thanks again for your continued interest in [Firm], and your patience in this process.
I'm a median student at a lower T14 with 3 callbacks, so I am understandably anxious to find employment in BigLaw. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

tbh i'm pretty shocked you managed median if you are having difficulty deciphering that pretty clear email. They aren't sure yet. You neither have an offer nor a rejection. I would guess that they are waiting to see how some things shake out before they commit, but's just speculation. You don't have an offer, but the door is not yet closed. Chill.

Well, per the letter, inform them if you are up against the letter. Otherwise, no need to respond and hang on tight.

It means they haven't decided yet and will get back to you. We do this all the time. Some candidates are definite yeses, some are definite nos, and some we need a little more time to think about and evaluate compared to the other people we have coming in. Best thing to do while you wait is to send one email back to the recruiter telling him or her that you remain very interested in the firm and would be happy to provide any further information if they need it.

So that he doesn't accept another offer assuming he was stealth dinged.brightthru2014 wrote:Why didn't they just wait until they were sure?malibustacy wrote:Sounds like a waitlist. I'd consider it. Vaguely say that you are considering an offer due next week. They appear like you, it hopefully seems like they just don't know how the numbers might shake out. Saying you have another offer shows that you are in demand (and therefore their initial gut positive impression of you was correct), and they are now under more pressure to say yay or nay. Frankly, the more time they get, chances are they will see more people they like at these callbacks, and you don't want to be the candidate whose file is increasingly getting pushed to the bottom of the stack.brightthru2014 wrote:Is this worth doing?malibustacy wrote:Sounds like a waitlist. Re: "...reiterate strong interest in your candidacy...everyone who met you was very impressed..." BUT NO OFFER??
I think this is terrible advice. (I'm on my firm's hiring committee) The reason we put people on the waitlist is that we're not ready to give an offer right now, but we might be willing to give one in a week or two. By creating a false deadline, you force us to make a decision right now, so the answer is almost definitely going to be no. Just be patient.malibustacy wrote:I'd consider it. You got a simple letter with clear instructions but you're over analyzing the meaning of it therefore making you feel like you don't know know what's going on. (Hopefully. It's actually bad if you read this letter and didn't understand it at all)brightthru2014 wrote:What?zot1 wrote:So this is why y'all have impostor syndrome...
You will like do this at work and will come back to TLS as a first year associate lamenting that you don't know what you're doing.

yeah co-signed. At this relatively early stage, I am more likely to recommend letting go of "maybe" candidates than making them an offerAnonymous User wrote:I think this is terrible advice. At least you got a waitlist email. I had a CB two weeks ago and radio silence. Some had CB last week and have already received dings and offers.
