Has anyone heard of firms tracking how you use your computer during an SA?

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Aug 12, 2016 4:13 am

I spent a lot of my downtime during my SA on reddit and buzzfeed (not doing anything NSFW, just dicking around). Reddit news is my preferred news source and so I was on there first thing every morning catching up, and I generally had a tab open (while also having Westlaw open and doing real work). I just assumed that this wouldn't be an issue, it's not like I wasn't doing my work on time or anything.

I was hanging out with someone who was convinced that their firm tracked their internet usage. Since my offer is pending (they send out offers in September) and I'm a neurotic law student I've been worried about it. Thoughts?

Do you really think the hiring committee has the time to sift through everyone's browsing history for the past two months?

They certainly could if they wanted to and they almost certainly won't unless you gave them a reason to.

@ my 1L firm this definitely happened to one person. They saw an inordinate amount of Timebuilder time spent on the internet and looked into it. He was on facebook and linkedin and stuff though, I dont know if news sites were an issue

+1.

The firm really isn't in the habit of closely monitoring you, but the info will be there if you give them a reason to.

Absolutely nothing you do on a firm computer or firm software is private.

That said, no one's gonna give a shit if you browse Reddit or ESPN or whatever as long as you do everything you need to with your actual work.

Everyone slacks off during work at some point in their browsing. When I was a SA I had people walk in on me browsing Twitter, ESPN w/e. Attorneys and support staff all do it. You close it quickly, do your work, and there's only a problem if there is a larger problem with your work.
